Things going on at Startup Weekend Kathmandu: Global Battle 2013

22 November: The top floor at SAP Falcha, this year’s venue for the Kathmandu edition of Global Battle, was packed to the brim with nervous participants waiting for the clock to strike 5. Suman Shakya, one of the organizers, was center-stage discussing tips and strategies. 51 registered participants were waiting their turn to pitch their ideas to garner votes. There’s competition right from the very beginning. All ideas do not see the light of the 54-hour battle. A few mock pitches later which drew muted applauses, it was time for the real deal.

60 seconds. That’s the time allotted to each idea. One by one the participants came on stage and in total 39 pitches were made. The winning ideas were,

bucket list, a portal where all wishes can be fulfilled got maximum of votes and bobo.com.np led by Prakash Bhatta whose idea of an online retailer of shoes; urban innovation hub addressing the problem of brain drain led by Shrijan Amatya; sitaico, an idea brought forth by Krishna Parajuli which would allow consumers to speak for free the first munite of a telephone call by playing personalized advertisements;; e-tickets in Nepal, a mobile apps and SMS service-based idea that will allow users to purchase and receive event tickets from anywhere in Nepal; wedding plan, an online platform to book, rent, print, and enjoy all wedding plan preparation; finding public toilet, an application over Google maps to find toilets in emergencies; momo trail, an application that lets one locate, review, and quantitatively rank momos in the city; samadhan, a web application to viralize problems related to government, or private enterprises; DoCoPoCo.com, a web-enabled company for moving furniture and other peripherals related to a home; visual Google analytics setup tool, a tool for non-tech website owners set up Google analytics with ease.

Some of the sought-after people at the event are the coaches are judges who are industry experts and contribute their time voluntarily to help the teams polish their ideas before the final presentation on Sunday. Coaches are, Anil Chitrakar (Social Entrepreneur and Architectural Heritage Expert), Bibhushan Bista (Co-founder and CEO of Young Innovations Pvt. Ltd.), Anand Bagaria (MD, Nimbus Hoding and Probiotech Industries), Vidhan Rana (Founding Partner, Biruwa Ventures), Deepa Shakya (Consultant at Regulatory Reform Project, IFC) , Sashi Bhattarai (Chairman, Knowledge Holding International Pvt. Ltd.), and Prasanna K.C. (Access to Finance Program, DFID). Judges for the event are Karmath Dangol (VP Engineering, CloudFactory), and Ranjit Acharya (CEO Prisma Advertising).
